Building upon the already interesting premise of the world being taken over by alien creatures sensitive to sound, A Quiet Place: Day One is a prequel that takes place before the first two films and chronicles the day in which the creatures first arrived on Earth. We saw a glimpse of this in A Quiet Place: Part II from the perspective of the Abbott family in their small hometown. This time, however, our protagonist is a hospice patient in the heart of the largest and loudest city on the planet, New York. This made for a riveting narrative that was filled with just as many tense moments as there were nail-biting action set pieces. I do think that the world building in terms of discovering more about these creatures’ origins took a backseat to the story of our protagonists for most of the runtime, but thanks to the fantastic performances from both Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn, as well as their character arcs throughout the film, the narrative ended up being a lot more emotional than I could’ve ever expected. Score: 8/10
