Between Evil Dead (2013) and Don’t Breathe, the filmography of director Fede Alvarez already seemed to make him the perfect candidate to helm the next installment of this iconic sci-fi horror franchise, and I’m happy to report that he indeed was. Taking place between the first two original Alien films, this movie not only boasts a new story following a group of young adults seeking new lives on a distant world and inexplicably coming across the Xenomorph in the process, but this film also manages to serve as a love letter to the Alien franchise, complete with thrilling action set pieces, chilling cinematography, references to almost every aspect of the Alien universe that served the story in creative ways, and no shortage of terrifying moments courtesy of Fede Alvarez’s signature directing style. PS: That third act was absolutely insane! Score: 8/10
