I will definitely say, this is by far the most unique biopic I’ve ever seen. Piece by Piece tells the true story of world renowned musician Pharrell Williams, using only LEGO pieces. Besides the mesmerizing visuals and, of course, the amazing soundtrack that spans the most notable songs that Pharrell has performed, produced, and been influenced by throughout his career, it was quite interesting seeing how Pharrell’s musical journey progressed from his humble beginnings as a founding member of the Neptunes to using his genre bending prowess to produce hits for the likes of Justin Timberlake, Kendrick Lamar, and many others. (It was very entertaining seeing all of these celebrities in LEGO form. Snoop Dogg was a standout for me.) Interestingly enough, despite the film being entirely made out of LEGOs, the story still took the form of a documentary, complete with celebrity interviews and voice notes taken from actual commentary during the production of the film. Because of this, the film doesn’t really lend itself to a traditional three act structure and has some tonal inconsistencies that I’m not sure were intentional. However, this is still a must watch for any fan of R&B, hip-hop, or even just LEGOs. Score: 8/10
