Minecraft is an open-world sandbox game that was released in 2011 where you interacted with its vast world by building and crafting a variety of items, from buildings to suits of armor. It took the gaming world by storm with its pixelated graphics and its seemingly endless possibilities only limited by the imagination of its players. It even eventually became the highest selling video game of all time, believe it or not. For a game such as this that grew to be as big as it was, of course an adaptation of sorts was in the cards. In this case, it comes in the form of A Minecraft Movie. Video game movie adaptations don’t usually have the best reputation, but something that really helped this adaptation in particular is that since the source material isn’t necessarily known for its gripping story, this movie didn’t try to be anything more than a fun romp through pixelated world the game is known for. With its unapologetically goofy tone, many references to the game that fans will undoubtedly recognize, and the over-the-top, but enjoyable, performances of the cast (Most notably Jack Black and Jason Mamoa.), this is definitely the type of film you go into expecting nothing but a good time at the theater, whether you’re a casual moviegoer or a Minecraft fan. Score: 6/10
