Superman was easily one of my most anticipated films of the year for multiple reasons. Firstly, although I personally have more of a connection to Marvel, I am a comic book fan who wants to see both Marvel and DC win first and foremost. Secondly, Superman officially marks the beginning of DC Comics’ latest attempt at a cinematic universe that now aims to be brighter and more reminecent of classic comics than the previous attempt. Thirdly, this new cinematic universe is being completely overseen by one of my personal favorite filmmakers and fellow comic book reader, Janes Gunn. After finally seeing Superman for myself, I must say it was quite a solid start to this new universe! The pacing was fast, the visuals were vibrant, and the action was intense. From Lex Luthor and Lois Lane to Green Lantern and Hawkgirl, everyone in the cast did an amazing job portraying these classic characters. Of course, the standout performance was David Corenswet as Superman. Corenswet portrays this iconic character with an emotional and physical vulnerability that we haven’t seen with other interations of the character. This Superman gets his butt kicked a lot, emotionally and physically, but it makes his comebacks that much more triumphant. In classic James Gunn fashion, this film introduces the audience to comic book characters that are not usually brought into the forefront and protrays them masterfully, including Mister Terrific, Metamorpho, and others I won’t name due to spoilers. However, I will say that the film’s dialogue and tone are witty and irreverent to a fault. It’s the type of tone and dialogue that works incredibly well with the Guardians of the Galaxy or the Suicide Squad, but can be a tad distracting or overwhelming when it comes to a character like Superman. I also think that some of the film’s runtime that was used to set up future projects could’ve been used for further character development. Overall though, I think James Gunn pulled off a near impossible feat and did a great job kicking off this new universe, introducing us to new characters, reintroducing us to familiar ones, and maintaining the sense of justice and hope reminecent of some of the best DC Comics stories. Also, Krypto the Super Dog definitely stole the show. Score: 8/10
