A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Review

Following the final season of the hit fantasy drama series, Game of Thrones, HBO has actually been dropping some pretty solid spinoffs based on George R.R. Martin’s other written works that take place in the same universe, centeries prior to the story we’re familiar with including both House of the Dragon, and now, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. This series follows an underdog hedge knight by the name of Sir Duncan the Tall who seeks to elevate his knightly status alongside his squire, Egg. Although A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms still has the interesting characters, the political intrigue, and the visceral action set pieces that the Game of Thrones franchise is known for (Sir Duncan’s jousting battle from episode five had probably some of the best cinematography I’ve seen in a series), this series went for a more lighthearted and comedic angle compared to Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. Sometimes the comedic gags landed seamlessly with the series’ established tone and sometimes they didn’t, which is probably my biggest gripe with the series. However, the chemistry between Sir Duncan and Egg was definitely a highlight, with Duncan’s naivety and Egg’s innocence making for a very entertaining and heartwarming dynamic. Even the supporting characters that supported the duo throughout the series such as Raymun Fossoway and Lyonel Baratheon were fun to watch. You can also bet on their being tons of Easter eggs and references to Game of Thrones lore throughout the series, including nods to both Baratheon and Targaryen families. Overall, this series was a short but entertaining watch, and I definitely appreciate how it tried to something different tone wise that hasn’t been done before as it relates to this franchise. I absolutely recommend this if you’re a Game of Thrones fan with a few hours to spare. Score: 8/10
