Based on the novel of the same name written by author Andy Weir (Weir is the same author who wrote The Martian, another sci-fi novel that got adapted into a film starring Matt Damon), Project Hail Mary is a sci-fi adventure film that follows an unassuming middle school teacher by the name of Ryland Grace, played by Ryan Gosling, who is sent into outer space on a mission to save the Earth. First off, I must say that this movie is pure sci-fi, through and through, with its mind-blowing visuals and sound design, its longer runtime, and its intense action set pieces perfectly capturing the essence of the greatest space odysseys. (Definitely got some Star Trek vibes from this film for sure.) Also, something else that I wasn’t expecting from this film was its relatively lighthearted tone, complete with comedic dialogue and endearing moments between the film’s characters. Granted, I probably should’ve expected it since this film was directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the same masterminds behind the Spider Verse films and The Mitchells vs. The Machines, but I digress. For a movie as lengthy as this one, it was remarkably well-paced. While the film mostly follows Grace’s isolation in deep space (Ryan Gosling’s performance was great in this film.), the film does have its fair share of supporting characters that elevated the film’s narrative. Rocky, an endearing alien made of rocks that Grace meets on his mission, not only served as the film’s most prominent supporting character, but also whose relationship with Grace was the emotional center of the film as well. Grace and Rocky learning to communicate and work together on this mission, as Rocky had a planet of his own to save as well, was entertaining to watch and even made for some very emotionally resonant moments. There are also a plethora of other characters that befriended Grace before his space mission and make appearances in flashbacks throughout the film such as the government specialist Eva or the security guard Carl. These flashbacks showing us Grace’s life before the mission were just as interesting as the moments in space. Grace’s heartfelt relationship with each character made him an easy underdog to root for and a great representation of the film’s themes of friendship and resilience. From laugh out loud comedic gags to depth-defying sci-fi action to even some tearjerking moments throughout, this film truly struck a perfect balance between sci-fi epic and heartwarming adventure. I strongly recommend giving it a watch. Score: 9/10
