Scary Movie 6 Movie Review

The very first Scary Movie released in the year 2000 took the world by storm as a horror comedy that sought to spoof the most well-known horror franchises using the Wayans Brothers unique brand of humor. From Scream to The Exorcist, no horror franchise was safe. (Ghostface from Scream has even remained a recurring villain throughout the series.) Besides the series’ comedic gags that not only spoofed horror franchises but also referenced films from other genres and even current events, these movies were bolstered by the hilarious cast that remained consistent throughout the six films (for the most part), most notably Marlon Wayans as Shorty, Anna Faris as Cindy, Regina Hall as Brenda, and Shawn Wayans as Ray. Twenty years and six installments later, we now have Scary Movie 6. The original cast members return alongside some newcomers, Ghostface once again returns as the villain, and I have to commend the film for its relentless sense of fun. Similar to previous films, this movie definitely wasn’t made with a riveting story in mind, but to give audiences a fun time at the theater. Almost every modern film, horror or otherwise, was referenced. (The films spoofed included The Substance, Get Out, and even K-Pop Demon Hunters. Definitely the most confused I’ve been watching a film as of late.) The film even had a plethora of celebrity cameos and references to some of the most controversial political topics that may be hit or miss depending on the audience. In my personal opinion, while it was nice to see this cast together again, the Scary Movie comedy formula of referencing as many controversial topics and popular films as possible with little narrative substance may have worked in the past, but by movie six, felt a bit dated. Like I mentioned before, though, if you’re looking for an entertaining time at the theater and nothing more, there is some fun to be had here if you don’t try to connect any narrative dots. Score: 4/10
